There cannot be many fans out there who do not know that behind the scenes documentaries at football clubs now appear to be a thing, but in fairness they can occasionally be quite eye opening and a decent insight into the side of the game that most remain blissfully unaware of.
Following the takeover of Wrexham by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, their Disney+ documentary is probably freshest in the mind of fans right now, but we have had Netflix’s Sunderland Til I die as they tracked their relegation from the Premier League and the Championship into League One, before attaining promotion back to the second tier, and top flight quartet Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have all featured in their own in more recent years.
Earlier this week it was confirmed that there was a new club on the block for the documentary treatment, and this time around it would be Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle side as the cameras went behind the scenes at Home Park.
The 39 year old, 120 capped former England international skipper, has had a mixed spell in management so far since hanging up his boots and his stand out spell was probably his first job as he transitioned to the dug out at Derby County. His time at DC United was more middling, but the Birmingham City spell was a disaster.
Having taken over the Championship side back in May he has again not had it all his own way at the Pilgrims, and 15 games into their 2024/25 campaign he has picked up four wins and four draws so far, leaving them in 18th place in the 24 team table, just one point from the relegation places.
Although the announcement of the document has come a few months after the season started, filming has already begun so presumably they have been there from day one for all the trials and tribulations so far.
The announcement comes as the side have managed to avoid defeat in their last two matches, but it seems likely that eventual viewers will be watching how they cope and deal with a battle against relegation, so it is likely to be fiery and quite dramatic.
Given Rooney’s profile in the game it will not just be Plymouth fans who will be eager watchers when it finally airs, but at this stage it is not known which platform or channel will ultimately be showing it.
Whilst we await that information, it is probably a good guess that it will not be too long before another club joins this new trend.
