After plenty of speculation on the summer transfer window rumour mill, Chelsea have again sold another player that some fans would have thought new manager Mauricio Pochettino could have got back to their best – or at least got more out of.

We are of course talking about United States international Christian Pulisic, as it has now been confirmed that the 24 year old attacker has finally completed a move to Italian Serie A side AC Milan. The deal struck between both clubs is said to be worth £20 million to the London side, who obviously are making efforts to offset their own recent spending when we consider Financial Fair Play rules. For those who like the have a small wager on football, it is unlikely to be the final sale the club makes.

Pulisic impressed at the Premier League level, and he was certainly an asset but his goalscoring record did leave concerns. In 145 appearances across all competitions for the club, he did only actually score 26 goals. It is not a great return, however you want to paint it – but Pulisic’s strength was really in his build up play and the team role he played.

Despite playing his part in their 2021 Champions Final success over Manchester City, and his over all appearances, he seemed to quickly become surplus to requirements at the club as Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter tried to manage a club, effectively being managed from above them.

We will see if Pochettino fares any better, but there is a tentative feeling that the US international will be glad of the break and that he certainly sees greener grass elsewhere.

He has reportedly signed a four year deal with the San Siro outfit, with a 12 month option in his favour, and he addressed his troubles upon his signing.

“It was a difficult last few season with Chelsea. For whatever reason I wasn’t getting the opportunities I wanted. For me it’s a brilliant opportunity to step away, get a fresh start and play for a big team like this.”

Chelsea for their part, were very respectful in their own statement.

“We wish Christian well and thank him for all his contributions during his time at the club.”

Having joined back in 2019 from German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for a reported £57.6 million, he became the most expensive North American player in the game, and of course, the Pennsylvania lad has his qualities, as epitomised by the fact he has been capped 60 times by his country.

Moving to the Serie A side sees him reunite with former Chelsea colleague Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who also made the move this summer.

Many will think Chelsea’s selling spree is not over yet given their spending.
