The 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign in Germany recently ended, with Bayern Munich claiming their 11th consecutive title and their 33rd in total. Borussia Dortmund ended the season in second place with the same number of points as Bayern but missed out on the top spot on goal difference.

The question being asked here is, did Dortmund over or underperform this season? Take a closer look right here.

How well did Dortmund do this year?

The last time Borussia Dortmund won the Bundesliga was in the 2010/11 season, and for many people, it looked as though they were going to break Bayern’s 10-year winning streak and finish the season at the top of the table.

They performed well all season, and it went right down to the wire. It was one of the closest Bundesliga finishes in recent living memory. All they needed in their final game of the season was a win against Mainz on Saturday, May 27th, but it wasn’t to be.

They could only manage a 2-2 draw in their final game, which wasn’t enough to knock Bayern off the top spot. After 34 games, Bayern had won 21, drawn 8, and lost 5, which gave them 71 points.

In comparison, Dortmund, who also finished on 71 points, won 22 games, drew 3 and lost 7. However, Bayern managed to score 92 and concede only 38, which gave them a +54 goal difference.

Dortmund scored 83 and conceded 44, which gave them only a +34 goal difference, which saw the 15-goal difference that separated the two teams ensure Bayern the title.

If Dortmund had just scored one more goal against Mainz on the final day of the season, the extra 2 points would have seen them win the title instead.

Whether Dortmund can bounce back to win the league next year remains to be seen, but if they perform as well as they did this year, there’s a good chance they could finally break Bayern’s epic unbeaten run.
