Tottenham Hotspur reportedly have their eyes on signing Montpellier striker Elye Wahi this summer.
While the north London club could be focused on looking for a new manager at the moment, the Lilywhites still have an eye on the upcoming summer transfer window and have reportedly set their sights on someone to try and sign once it opens.
According to a recent report from Jeunes Footeux (via Sport Witness) Spurs are one of the clubs, alongside Borussia Dortmund and fellow Premier League side Arsenal, that have an interest in Wahi.
The report also adds that a summer move away from Montpellier has not been ruled out for the 20-year-old, who could cost €30m (£26m). And, states that any potential deal will depend on whether the new manager wants it.
Having worked his way out of Montpellier’s youth ranks, the striker has gone on to make 82 senior appearances, scoring 25 goals in the process.
This season has seen the Frenchman, who has been described as a “powerful” player by ex-Caen academy director Francis de Taddeo, find the net 12 times in 24 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring four in his previous three games.
As well as having the joint-highest number of shots at goal at Montpellier (43), Wahi has the highest number of shots on target (25) and made more carries into the penalty area than any other player at the club (26).
Do Spurs need to sign a new striker this summer?
Yes
No
With eight clubs in the Premier League making more carries into the penalty area than Spurs (133) this season, having a player like Wahi in their side could give the Lilywhites an extra attacking dynamic in that regard.
Also, with current Spurs striker Harry Kane set to enter the final year of his contract at the north London club this summer and having been linked with a move away from Tottenham in recent weeks, securing a deal for the Montpellier star see the Lilywhites find their potential long-term replacement for the Englishman.
Moving forward, we feel that if Spurs have a new manager in place by the time the summer transfer window opens, whoever that is should definitely consider launching a move to sign Wahi.
