Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret according to journalist Ciro Venerato.

The north London club have a recent track record when it comes to signing players from Serie A such as Ivan Perisic, Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Now though, it has been revealed that Antonio Conte’s have set their sights on bringing another one of Italy’s stars to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur fans, who were these players sold to? Starting with an easy one: Gareth Bale

Speaking to Calcio Napoli 24 (via Sport Witness) Venerato had this to say about Meret and the interest in him.

“Napoli would like to continue with Meret, and in this sense we will have to sit down at the negotiating table and await developments.

“There are some Premier League clubs that have however registered an interest in the Friulian, Tottenham above all.”

After initially joining Napoli on loan from Udinese in July 2018, the Italian eventually signed to his current side on a permanent basis a year later.

With 125 appearances for the Serie A leaders under his belt in all competitions, the 25-year-old has kept 42 clean sheets along the way.

Do Spurs need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer?

This season has seen Meret face 61 shots on target across his 24 league appearances, saving 45 of them, leaving him with the third-highest save percentage (77%) in the division.

In addition to that, only four other goalkeepers have made more defensive actions outside the penalty area than him (24), showing that he isn’t just a very capable shot-stopper.

Lauded as a “stellar” goalkeeper by journalist Roberto Rojas, Meret has shown he has what it takes to be a top player in net and why he’d be an impressive signing for Spurs.

Bearing in mind how current Tottenham shot-stopper, Hugo Lloris, is set to enter the final year of his contract at the north London club this summer, and the fact that his future has been brought into question recently, securing a deal for the Napoli star could be a smart bit of business from the Lilywhites.
