Pundit Frank McAvennie has urged reported Newcastle United transfer target James Maddison to join the Tyneside club during the upcoming summer window.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with the Leicester City midfielder previously, having had two bids for him rejected during the previous summer transfer window.
This has then led to the 26-year-old’s future being the topic of discussion, with one pundit claiming that the midfielder should set his sights on a move to St. James’ Park.
Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie had this to say about Maddison and where he should move to should he end up leaving Leicester this summer.
He said: “I would go to Newcastle. He’d play all the time, they are on a journey. I think they will make Europe this year that is for sure.
“They did not know if they were going to be in the league last year. I did not think they would beat Man United but it is the first step, they have got to a final.
“It is a journey I think it would be mad not to go there. He would love it there as well. They are going to buy again and they are going to be better and better and it will not be long before they win a cup.”
This season has seen the midfielder score nine goals and deliver five assists in 17 Premier League appearances, which is more goal contributions than any other Leicester player has been able to provide.
Are you confident Newcastle will sign James Maddison this summer?
Back in January 2020, Maddison haunted Newcastle by scoring a goal that was described as “sensational” by journalist Michael Bailey in a game that saw Leicester beat the Magpies 3-0 at St. James’ Park.
To further highlight how important he is for the Foxes, Brendan Rodgers’ side have lost six of the seven league games that Maddison has not featured in.
His overall performances have earned the England international a strong season rating of 7.3/10 from WhoScored, making him the 11th-highest rated player in the division, putting him above the likes of Bruno Guimaraes (7.25/10) and Joelinton (7.2/10).
With McAvennie urging Maddison to link up with Eddie Howe’s side this summer, it’s clear that based on his performances this season and Newcastle’s previous eagerness to sign him, would make it a star signing for the club to pull off.
