Newcastle United are reportedly willing to pay the release clause in Gabri Veiga’s contract at Celta Vigo during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The two previous transfer windows have shown that the Magpies are not reluctant when it comes to spending money on new players such as Sven Botman and Anthony Gordon among others.

This seems to be the case once again, as the Toon have looked to have identified someone they think is worthy of getting the chequebook out for.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

According to a recent report from Spanish media outlet AS (via Sport Witness), Newcastle are leading the race to sign Veiga this summer ahead of the likes of Arsenal and the two Manchester clubs and are the first side to make a step towards landing a deal for him.

The report also adds that the Toon are willing to not only pay the €40m (£35m) release clause in his contract, but also offer him a financially significant deal worth around €5m (£4.3m) a year.

With 107 appearances for Celta across their senior and youth sides, the 20-year-old has scored 18 goals and provided four assists along the way.

This season has seen the Spaniard show how much of a dangerous attacking player he is in La Liga and what he’d be able to potentially offer Eddie Howe’s side.

Do you think Newcastle will spend heavy this summer?

For example, in addition to scoring eight goals and delivering three assists in 24 league appearances, the youngster has the second-highest average of shots (1.9) and dribbles per game (1.1) at the club as well as the third-highest average of key passes per game (0.8).

Having previously been hailed for his “amazing” performances this season by talent scout Jacek Kulig, it’s easy to see why Veiga has some of England’s big clubs looking at him and why Newcastle are apparently so keen to secure a deal for him.

Moving forward, if the Tyneside club do end up landing the youngster’s signature this summer, this would surely give them an exciting prospect that could well become a long-term and important figure for the Toon based on what he’s already shown he’s capable of on the pitch.
