Former Premier League player and pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested that Mason Mount would be better off joining Liverpool than Manchester United.

After being linked with a move for the Chelsea midfielder, it has recently been reported that United also have their eyes on the player.

This has since led to one pundit making the argument that the Englishman would be a better fit for Liverpool, who have also been linked with a move for Jude Bellingham, rather than the Red Devils.

How well do you know these Liverpool squad numbers? Starting off with an easy one: Mo Salah

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor had this to say when asked if he thinks Mount would be a valuable addition to Erik ten Hag’s side.

He said: “I don’t think so at all. I keep hearing this – Mason Mount to Man United. The only club that could do with him, and could get him, is Liverpool – he could fit into that [Georginio] Wijnaldum role.

“They need a couple of quality midfielders because they are working with a blank canvas. You can put him next to Jude Bellingham.

“But Man United don’t need him at all. They’ve got [Christian] Eriksen, [Bruno] Fernandes – even [Jadon] Sancho to play a similar role. All three are better than Mount, there’s no doubt about it.”

With his current contract at the west London club set to expire in the summer of 2024, getting the midfielder to sign a new deal has been “complicated” according to Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

Bearing in mind how Liverpool have the likes of Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of contract at the end of the season, should any of those players end up leaving, it’d make sense for the Reds to bring in someone like Mount as a potential replacement.

Described as a “special” player by Declan Rice, the 24-year-old has 27 goals and 24 assists to his name across 128 Premier League appearances, showcasing the top-flight experience he has and what he’d be able to offer Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Overall, should the England international look to leave Chelsea in the summer, we feel that Liverpool should do all they can to bring him to Anfield ahead of United.
