BBC pundit and former Premier League player Alan Hutton believes Liverpool could look to get rid of Joe Gomez during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Last week, it was reported that the Merseyside club are looking to move Joel Matip out of the club this summer.

Following that, Hutton has shared his thoughts on the possibility of the Reds looking to offload another one of their current defenders during the summer period.

How well do you know these Liverpool squad numbers? Starting off with an easy one: Mo Salah

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said this when asked if Liverpool could look to get rid of any other defender at the club as well as Matip this summer.

He said: “You look at the likes of Gomez, I think he is a good player when he is alongside [Virgil] Van Dijk and he is fully fit and firing on all cylinders. Will they try and move somebody out to bring somebody in? Possibly.

“I think if you look at Trent [Alexander-Arnold], he needs a bit of competition. I know [Calvin] Ramsay went down from Aberdeen but he is still very young.

“I think there will be players that they will look to bring in. But, when everybody is fit and confident, they have got a quality squad, there is no denying that. So that is where [Jurgen] Klopp will want to get back to.”

This season has seen the £85k-per-week centre-back start 21 of the 29 games he’s appeared in across all competitions this season, showing that he is an important figure for the Reds.

Despite previously being praised by Klopp as a “sensational” player, Gomez has found himself on the end of some criticism in recent weeks and months, with Alan Shearer claiming earlier this season that the Englishman makes too many mistakes on the pitch.

Should Liverpool sell Joe Gomez this summer?

No

Specifically, Gomez has made more errors that have led to an opponent having a shot at goal (4) than any other Liverpool player across all competitions this season.

With that in mind, and the fact that he has been linked with a move away from Anfield previously, potentially cashing in on the defender this summer to help bring in a better replacement could well be on Liverpool’s agenda this summer.
