Liverpool have been urged by pundit and former Premier League player Gabby Agbonlahor to keep hold of James Milner beyond this season.

As things stand, the Merseyside club have a number of players in their squad that are out of contract in the summer, with Roberto Firmino being one that will be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

With the summer transfer period approaching, one pundit has shared his thoughts on another figure with an expiring contract in Jurgen Klopp’s ranks.

How well do you know these Liverpool squad numbers? Starting off with an easy one: Mo Salah

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor had this to say about Milner and some other players at the club that could find themselves on the move this summer.

He said: “I think his experience and leadership is well worth having. Fabinho should go this summer, [Naby] Keita will go, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain will go. So Liverpool will need a player like Milner, for sure.

“Players will come in, for sure, but you don’t know what injury problems they’ll have or whether they will settle in straight away.

“Milner is definitely one to keep around the squad. He won’t be moaning about not getting game time, he knows his role. I think if you’re Klopp you definitely give him a new deal. Not many have got more experience than him, and he can play in multiple positions if needed as well.”

Should Liverpool offer James Milner a new deal?

Despite only starting 11 games this season across all competitions, the fact that the 37-year-old, who reportedly earns £60k per week, has appeared in 32 matches for the Reds shows how important he is for Klopp.

In fact, the German has shared how much of a significant figure Milner has been for the team in recent years, lauding him for the “massive” performance he delivered against Newcastle United back in April.

Moving forward, if the manager wants the veteran to continue at Liverpool beyond this season and the player is happy to do so regardless how much playing time he may or may not be getting, the club should definitely offer Milner a new deal rather than potentially see him leave as a free agent in the summer.
