Liverpool are reportedly one of the clubs interested in securing a summer transfer deal for Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.

The Merseyside club currently have several players in their squad that have hit or gone over the age of 30, some of which include the likes of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara.

With that in mind, the Reds seem to have set their sights on signing a new midfielder that could well become a long-term replacement for one of those previously mentioned figures.

How well do you know these Liverpool squad numbers? Starting off with an easy one: Mo Salah

According to a recent report from Spain (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are interested in signing Veiga this season, as are the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Real Madrid.

The report also adds that the midfielder’s deal is set to expire in 2024 and has a release clause worth €40m (£35m), although the Spanish club want to offer him a new deal and raise that clause.

After making 64 appearances for Celta’s youth side, scoring 10 goals and providing one assist, the 20-year-old has gone on to make 44 senior appearances for the club, finding the net nine times and supplying three assists.

In fact, all of those senior goals and assists have come across the 25 La Liga games he’s played this season. At his age and at this level, it is easy to see why there is such high-calibre interest in his services.

Do Liverpool need to sign a creative midfielder this summer?

No

Hailed for his “amazing” performances earlier this season by talent scout Jacek Kulig, who also described the player as a “very interesting box-to-box midfielder”, Veiga has the joint-highest number of shots on target (22) at the club as well as the joint-highest number of goal-creating actions (7) and the highest rate of shots on target per 90 minutes (1.32).

Bearing in mind how the likes of Henderson, Milner, Thiago, Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita have failed to score a goal in the Premier League this season, having a player like the Celta youngster in the team would surely give the Reds an extra attacking dynamic and goal threat from the midfield amid their clear struggles this season and the well-documented need for upgrades in that area of the pitch.
