Former Premier League player and current talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has shared his thoughts on Graham Potter’s current situation at Chelsea and the possibility of the west London club potentially hiring Roberto De Zerbi as a replacement.
Prior to Chelsea’s recent 1-0 win over Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday, the Blues boss has found himself under pressure following a run of poor form.
In fact, it was reported that the club were looking at Potter’s replacement at Brighton & Hove Albion, De Zerbi, as a potential replacement for the Englishman.
This has since led to one pundit sharing his thoughts on the matter, suggesting that Chelsea should not look once again to the AMEX Stadium for a new manager.
Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor had this to say on the situation.
He said: “I can’t see Chelsea going for De Zerbi. Obviously if the defeats keep coming for Potter, he will have to lose his job. That’s clear.
“But they’ve got to have learned their lesson. They can’t go for someone who has done well at a smaller club. They’ve got to go for an elite manager with a track record of working at the highest level.
“There’s no way De Zerbi is the answer to this problem they’re facing. They’ve got to look elsewhere.”
Since the Italian took charge of the Seagulls, he has overlooked 22 games in total across all competitions, winning 11, drawing four and losing seven.
Do you think Graham Potter will be in charge of Chelsea next season?
Yes
No
Their latest match saw them secure an impressive 4-0 win over West Ham United, earning themselves an overall team rating of 7.27/10 from WhoScored, significantly higher than the Hammers’ rating of 5.94/10 on the day.
Even though De Zerbi has done fairly well with his Brighton side since arriving at the club, it’s understandable why Agbonlahor thinks Chelsea shouldn’t consider hiring him as a potential replacement for Potter given his lack of top level experience, which the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte had when they joined the west London club.
