Southampton journalist Jacob Tanswell has shared some behind-the-scenes details regarding current interim Saints boss Ruben Selles.

Following the departure of Nathan Jones earlier this month, the south coast club have had Selles in interim charge of the first team.

The 39-year-old got off to a perfect start in the dugout as he saw his side beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday thanks to a goal from club captain James Ward-Prowse.

How many times did Wesley Hoedt feature in an underwhelming Saints stay?

With the Saints now having beaten the west London club twice in the league this season, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding Selles and his position at the club moving forward.

In a recent Twitter post, Tanswell had this to say on the situation.

He said: “#SaintsFC‘s players and staff want Ruben Selles as manager – “he has the ability to make them run through brick walls.” Selles told home truths, pushed players & restored Southampton’s best strengths. He’s given fans & the club hope.”

Would you be happy to see Ruben Selles become Southampton's permanent manager?

In an article he wrote for The Athletic attached to his tweet, Tanswell revealed that the current interim boss has been and is a popular figure at the club, who can make the players do whatever he asks of them.

Prior to the match against Graham Potter’s side, the Spaniard shared his wishes to be named as Southampton’s permanent manager.

Having now shown his capabilities as a main head coach by seeing his side secure the win over Chelsea, as well as now apparently having the backing of the players and the staff, appointing him as the club’s long-term replacement for Jones is definitely something that Sport Republic considers.

Moving forward, unless a decision is made beforehand, the best thing Selles can do is to focus on making sure Saturday’s victory wasn’t just a one-off and that his side can follow that up with another win against fellow strugglers Leeds United this weekend.
