Former Premier League player and BBC pundit Alan Hutton has shared his thoughts on Newcastle United potentially signing Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Magpies are monitoring the full-back as they aim to bring in a new left-back this summer that could slot into Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

This has since led to one pundit sharing his thoughts on the player and the possibility of him making a move to St. James’ Park.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton had this to say about Tierney and whether he could get regular game time at Newcastle.

He said: “I think he could. I have always liked Kieran Tierney as a footballer. It is hard for me to say but when he was at Celtic he was outstanding. For Scotland as well.

“I knew it was going to be a big jump going down to the Premier League but I knew he was ready for it. Unfortunately they have brought in [Oleksandr] Zinchenko who has been outstanding.

“But I think somewhere like Newcastle, where he would be loved, they would love the way he plays, I think that would suit. For me, I think he is a better player overall than their current options.”

Since joining Arsenal from Celtic back in August 2019, the 25-year-old has made 112 appearances for the north London club across all competitions, scoring five goals and delivering 13 assists along the way.

This season has seen the Scotsman start just four of the 16 Premier League games he’s appeared in, showing why the question of potentially getting more game time at Newcastle was put Hutton’s way.

Having started all six of Arsenal’s Europa League games this season, the former Celtic figure has shown his talent on the ball from an attacking point of view.

For example, Tierney has the second-highest total of passes into the final third of the pitch (36) and progressive carries (16), as well as having the second-highest total of recoveries (31), highlighting his defensive capabilities as well.

Taking all of this into account, once the summer transfer window opens, we feel that Newcastle should definitely make an approach to Arsenal to see if they would be willing to sell Tierney.
