Manchester United have not been shy in terms of backing Erik ten Hag in the transfer market and giving him the financial freedom to bring new players to the club.

For example, the previous summer transfer window saw United splash a significant amount of cash to bring in the likes of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.

Looking ahead to the next summer transfer window, one player the club could look to add to Ten Hag’s squad that we feel would be a dream signing for the Dutchman is Frenkie de Jong.

Recent reports have suggested Barcelona could be forced into selling the player due to their ongoing financial difficulties, leaving the door open for United to chance their arm a second time after previously failing to secure his services over the summer.

The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for the Barcelona midfielder in pre-season and even agreed a fee with the Spanish club to sign him.

After failing to get him through the door at Old Trafford, it has been reported more recently that Ten Hag is open to making another move to sign the Dutchman in the next summer transfer window.

In this quiz, we will take a look at who topped the club's scoring charts and when. First, who was United's top scorer this season?

During his time at Barcelona, the 25-year-old has scored 15 goals and delivered 19 assists in 165 appearances across all competitions.

This season has seen the Dutchman make 18 La Liga appearances for Xavi’s side, earning himself an overall performance rating of 7.15/10 from WhoScored in the process, making him the fourth-highest-rated player currently at the club.

Should United try and sign Frenkie de Jong again this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

This highlights his importance to the Camp Nou outfit and why they may be reluctant to sell him.

However, with La Liga reportedly telling Barcelona to significantly reduce their wage bill, one potential way of doing that would be to sell De Jong, as he is currently thought to be the club’s highest earner with a weekly wage of £642k per week.

Moving forward, with the next summer transfer window in mind, if United can finally secure a deal for De Jong and give Ten Hag the player he’s been after since his arrival at Old Trafford, this would further show how much backing the manager has from the club’s hierarchy and give the team some extra quality in midfield.
