Manchester United are reportedly in advanced in-house talks over securing a new contract for David de Gea.
The club currently have a number of players in their squad that have contracts expiring at the end of the season.
While some have options to extend their deals for an extra year, it has been revealed that the Old Trafford outfit are in the midst of potentially securing a new in-house deal for one figure in particular.
According to a recent report from Football Insider, the Red Devils are confident that the goalkeeper will commit to a new deal on reduced terms after signalling his willingness to accept a cut to his current £375k-per-week wages.
The report also adds that United have offered De Gea a three-year deal worth £200k per week after Erik ten Hag was convinced by his performances this season.
United signed the Spaniard back in the 2011 summer transfer window from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth a reported fee of around £18.9m.
Would you be pleased to see De Gea sign a new contract?
Since then, the 32-year-old has gone on to make 517 appearances for United across all competitions, prior to Wednesday’s league match against Leeds United, keeping 178 clean sheets and winning numerous trophies.
This season has seen the veteran make 21 appearances for Ten Hag’s side in the Premier League, across which he has faced 81 shots on target, saving 55 of them.
Having been hailed as an “extraordinary” player in the past by journalist Steven Railston, the shot-stopper is clearly still an important figure for his team, which makes it easy to see why they are apparently keen to tie him down to a new deal.
Moving forward, if the club can secure a new deal for De Gea on lower wages, this will surely be a big positive for everyone connected to United, especially if the goalkeeper is able to keep showing how important he is for Ten Hag’s side.
