Writer for the Rangers Review Stevie Clifford has shared his Rangers transfer ‘concern’ after a reported rejected bid for Morgan Whittaker.
The Scottish Sun reported that Michael Beale’s side tabled a £900,000 bid for the striker, but Swansea City wants at least £2 million for his services.
Whittaker spent the first half of this season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, he scored nine times and provided seven assists for the League One side before the Championship side recalled him earlier this month.
Rangers haven’t bought any new recruits in so far this January, so some Gers fans may find that to be somewhat of a worry.
Speaking to the Rangers Review, Clifford said that there’s a bit of a ‘concern’ with Rangers’ business this month, bids ‘could have been earlier’ if targets had already been identified.
He stated (2:44), “The concern is that if bids are getting knocked back [for likes of Morgan Whittaker] and we’re already on the 17th then, there’s a wee bit of frustration on the length of time it’s taken because surely these bids could have been earlier if we’re identifying these players and trying to make them part of the squad. So there’s that, that wee side of it I think everybody will probably share that frustration.”
TIF’s view on Clifford’s comments…
It’s understandable that there’s cause for concern with Rangers’ lack of transfer business in January so far, but a lot can change in a couple of weeks.
If the Gers are able to get a couple of new faces in the door before the end of the month then the perception of what’s been achieved could do a 180-degree turn.
Beale has certainly not been sitting on his hands and doing nothing, he’s said he wants to sign ‘exciting’ players and claims they’re ‘working away’ amidst links to Todd Cantwell and the previously mentioned Whittaker.
The 22-year-old has 14 goals in 45 League One games for Plymouth and Lincoln City, so there’s definitely some promise there. Should they land him it could be one of those where they build up his profile and then move him on in a few years’ time.
Perhaps Beale is going about his transfer business cautiously, focusing on getting the right players and not anyone who says yes to the offer of coming to Rangers.
