Wolves are set to complete a transfer deal for Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes according to journalist John Percy.

The Midlands club had reportedly agreed a £15m deal for the midfielder earlier in the month, only for Lyon to come in and make a better offer for him.

Now though, the Old Gold have seemingly put to bed any concerns there may have been about potentially seeing Gomes slip out of their grasp.

In a recent Twitter post, Percy had this to say on the matter.

He said: “#Wolves are set to complete the €17m signing of Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes. Gomes is expected to fly in for his medical early next week. Big signing for Julen Lopetegui #wwfc.”

Do you remember who Wolves signed Ivan Cavaleiro from?

During his time with the Brazilian club, the 21-year-old has made 119 appearances across their senior and youth sides, scoring four goals and delivering three assists along the way.

Gomes’ latest league campaign with Flamengo saw him end their campaign with more tackles in the defensive (37) and midfield third of the pitch (45) than any other player at the club, as well as the joint-highest for tackles made in the attacking third as well (10).

In addition to that, he also had the third-highest total of blocks (24) and joint-third-highest for interceptions (26).

This shows just how much of a hard worker he is and how much of a tough opponent he can be across the field.

Bearing in mind how only Arsenal (103) and Manchester United (102) have made fewer tackles in the midfield third of the pitch in the Premier League this season than Wolves (104), this highlights why adding a figure like Gomes to the team would strengthen them in that area.

Moving forward, if this ends up being the final incoming transfer that Wolves make before the January transfer window closes, this would be a fine end to their month in addition to the other signings they’ve made such as Pablo Sarabia, Mario Lemina and Craig Dawson.
