Fabrizio Romano has shared some behind-the-scenes details regarding Tottenham Hotspur’s reported interest in Sporting CP defender Pedro Porro.

The north London club have been linked with a move for the right-back since the end of last month before the January transfer window opened for business.

After initially joining his current club on loan from Manchester City back in 2020, the 23-year-old became a permanent fixture at Sporting during the previous summer transfer window.

Having made 93 appearances for the Portuguese club, the Spaniard has found the net 11 times and delivered 19 assists.

With a move back to England being mooted, Romano has dropped an update regarding Spurs’ interest in Porro.

In a recent Twitter post, Romano had this to say on the matter:

Understand Pedro Porro is top of the list for Tottenham as new right-back. Spurs will try to sign Porro as [the] player would be keen on the move.

How well do you know where these Spurs signings came from? Take our quiz to find out! Firstly, where did Dimitar Berbatov arrive from?

“It’s [a] difficult deal in January as Sporting have been very clear: €45m release clause or no way. Stance could change in June.”

The full-back’s debut season as a permanent Sporting player has seen him show how much of a useful attacking figure he can be.

For example, as well as scoring one goal and providing five assists in 11 league games, Porro has also completed more passes into the 18-yard box (21) than any other Sporting player.

Should Spurs pay the release clause to sign Pedro Porro this month?

In addition to that, only Pedro Goncalves (38) has had more shots at goal than the right-back (29), further highlighting how much of a danger he can be at the top of the pitch.

This makes it easy to see why the Lilywhites think so highly of him and why Sporting would not consider selling him unless the £39m release clause was met.

With all of that in mind, it appears that Spurs have a decision to make over whether or not they feel signing Porro would be worth the fee at this stage of the season.
