Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost in the race to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, according to a new report.

Tottenham’s interest in Skriniar is nothing new, with it being reported last September that they were one of two English teams weighing up a swoop for the defender in 2023.

Following that, it then came to light that Spurs were readying a move for the 27-year-old, although the rest of the Premier League ‘big six’ were named as interested parties in the player whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

According to a report from CalcioMercato, Inter have made the maximum possible efforts to tie down the Slovak to a new contract, but there is now growing pessimism about being able to do so.

This comes as good news for Tottenham, who could use this opportunity to swoop for the centre-back, and it is further detailed that they are the primary English club currently holding an interest.

TIF thoughts on Skriniar to Tottenham…

Hailed as a ‘warrior’ by sports writer Hussein Mamdouh, the 54-time Slovakia international would be a massive upgrade on the options Antonio Conte currently has at his disposal, as evidenced by his performances over the past year.

The 6 foot 2 enforcer has averaged more tackles and blocks per 90 than Eric Dier, while an average pass completion rate of 91.7% places him in the 95th percentile compared to his positional peers, and is a very important quality for a modern centre-back to possess.

With Inter regularly utilising a 3-5-2 system, he would be able to adapt quickly to Conte’s preferred style, and the fact that he would be available on either cut-price terms or a free transfer at the end of the season means that Spurs will not have to break the bank to sign a top player.
