Journalist Fabrizio Romano says that Tottenham Hotspur are ‘leading the race’ to sign Sporting defender Pedro Porro.

Although heavily linked with Spurs, both London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal are also reportedly in the race for his signature.

However, Sporting keep insisting that they will only let Porro go if a club pays his €45m (£40m) release clause.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano has shared that despite interest elsewhere, it is Antonio Conte’s side that are ‘leading the race’ for his signature:

“For Pedro Porro, Tottenham are the club leading the race. For Chelsea, we have many links, but at the moment I’m told that the club who are actively working to sign Pedro Porro is Tottenham.”

TIF thoughts on Porro to Tottenham…

Sporting do not seem to be budging on the release clause for Porro, and so the Lilywhites simply must pay it in full if they are serious about signing the player.

Hailed as a ‘special talent‘ by journalist Zach Lowy, the right-back is currently ranking in the top 1% of all his positional peers in Europe’s top leagues for a number of key metrics, including shots, assists, shot-creating actions and touches per game over the past year, showing how much of an attacking threat that he is, and that he could thrive in Conte’s wing-back system.

Porro already has ten assists in total over all competitions so far this season, while only Emerson Royal has managed a single assist of all Tottenham’s right wing-back options in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has been heavily criticised this campaign, with journalist Josh Bunting claiming that he is ‘dreadful’ and ‘isn’t good enough’ for the top flight.

Nonetheless, Porro would be a huge upgrade in that role, and the North Londoners simply need to get this deal done.
