Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Stade Rennes winger Jeremy Doku.

After working his way through the youth ranks at his previous club RSC Anderlecht, the winger went on to make 37 senior appearances for the Belgian club where he scored six goals and provided seven assists.

Then in October 2020, the attacker joined Rennes in a deal worth over €26m (£23m) and has since gone on to make 68 appearances across all competitions prior to tonight’s Ligue 1 clash against Clermont Foot.

Despite having over two years left on his contract at Rennes, the Belgian international has found himself being linked with a move to the Premier League.

According to a recent report from Foot Mercato, Southampton have made an enquiry to Rennes over a potential transfer for Doku.

How many times did Wesley Hoedt feature in an underwhelming Saints stay?

This season has seen the 20-year-old start just two of the 13 games he’s appeared in this season, with injuries keeping him out of action at times.

Across his 10 league appearances, the winger, who has previously been linked with a move to Liverpool, has managed to show what sort of threat he carries for the team.

For example, Doku has the second-highest number of successful dribbles (16) at Rennes as well as having the fourth-highest rate of shot-creating actions per 90 minutes (5) at the club.

Described as being a ‘magic’ player by Roberto Martinez, the winger could be a useful addition to Nathan Jones’ side if he’s able to play regularly and show off his attacking talent.

The winger is also listed as similar to Arsenal star Martin Odegaard, who has been lighting things up in the Premier League this season with seven goals and five assists for the Gunners.

With the Saints already adding the likes of Mislav Orsic and Carlos Alcaraz to their squad this month, bringing in Doku could be another great way for the club to bolster their attack.

Taking into account how only five clubs in the Premier League have a lower rate of shot-creating actions per 90 minutes than Southampton (19.5) this season, signing a player like the Rennes figure could be just what they need to help them become a deadlier attacking side.
