Sky Sports reporter James Savundra believes Newcastle United will try and sign Youri Tielemans.

It was reported towards the back end of 2022 that the injury sustained by Newcastle ace Jonjo Shelvey had accelerated the club’s desire to sign a new central midfielder during the January transfer window.

Therefore, seeing links emerge to players such as Tielemans and Moises Caicedo only emphasises that point even further that Eddie Howe is desperate to bolster his midfield ranks.

Tielemans has been heavily linked to Newcastle in recent times, mainly because he’s Premier League-proven, at a good age, and perhaps most importantly, is set to become a free agent in the summer, so signing him this month could represent excellent value.

Savundra admitted on Wednesday when speaking on Transfer Talk that After speaking to colleague Keith Downie, he would be surprised if the club didn’t at least test the waters with Leicester City and Tielemans.

He said: “There is that long-standing interest in Youri Tielemans who we spoke about this morning [Wednesday] so I think Keith would be surprised if they didn’t test the waters with that. Tielemans, out of contract in the summer, could get him for a cut-price fee.

Would Tielemans start for Newcastle?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“They’re not going to want to break the bank there as Dan Ashworth was saying there [pre-Leicester game] and don’t want to handcuff themselves when it comes to summer spending with Financial Fair Play constraints, so they aren’t going to be smashing their transfer record this January, but one or two additions may happen.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Tielemans…

The fact that respected Sky Sports reporter Downie would seemingly be surprised if the Magpies didn’t at least try and see if they could and Tielemans should hand Newcastle fans some hope they could land him.

Tielemans has long been a target for both Newcastle and their top-four rivals Arsenal, however, given the Gunners are focusing on a deal for Mykhailo Mudryk it could allow the Magpies a free run at the midfielder.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

If Newcastle could add Tielemans to their ranks midseason then it would surely put them in a great spot to challenge for the top four on a very serious basis as he has that magic in his boots which was showcased against Everton when he scored a ‘stunning‘ volley.
