Newcastle United are reportedly looking to secure a potential loan move for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge this month, according to Craig Hope.
After scoring six goals and delivering four assists in 113 appearances for KRC Genk, the midfielder joined the Blades back in the 2020 January transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of around £22m.
Since then, the 24-year-old has gone on to make 87 appearances for the Yorkshire club across all competitions, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists along the way.
With the Norway international set to enter the final year of his contract at United in the summer, the last days of the January transfer window could see Berge return to the top flight of English football.
In a recent Twitter post, Hope had this to say about the situation:
“Newcastle are exploring a loan deal for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge. More to follow.”
This season has seen the United star show how much of a capable midfield figure he is, especially from an attacking point of view.
Specifically, Berge finds himself in the top five at the Yorkshire club for the average of shots (1.4), key passes (1.2) and dribbles (1.5) per game he’s racked up in this current Championship campaign.
Would you be happy to see Newcastle sign Sander Berge?
His overall performances have earned the former Genk player a solid season rating of 7.02/10 from WhoScored, leaving only five other players at Bramall Lane with a higher rating than him.
Having also been dubbed a “Rolls-Royce” by Rhian Brewster, this further showcases how much of an impressive player he is in the middle of the pitch.
Bearing in mind how current Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey looks set to make a move away from St James’ Park and join Nottingham Forest on loan, it’s easy to see why the Magpies are exploring the possibility of bringing in Berge until the end of the season.
