Newcastle United journalist Luke Edwards has addressed recent rumours linking the Tyneside club with a transfer move for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Toon were interested in securing a deal for the midfielder, with a transfer fee of €60m (£53m) being touted.

In a recent Twitter post, Edwards had this to say about the links to the Lazio star as well as what the rest of the winter transfer window could hold for the Magpies.

He said: “Nothing in reports that #nufc are looking to sign Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio just like there has been nothing in virtually every single #nufc transfer story so far this month. I still think they will do something towards end of window but nothing certain.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

In regards to pouring cold water on the links to Milinkovic-Savic, this should be a big disappointment for the Newcastle supporters given how impressive he has been for Lazio this season.

For example, with 22 appearances under his belt for the Italian side across Serie A and the Europa League prior to their league match against Sassuolo, the 27-year-old has scored five goals and delivered seven assists.

Would you take Sergej Milinkovic-Savic at Newcastle?

In addition to having more progressive passes (60) and more goal-creating actions (10) than any other player at Lazio, the Serbian has also racked up the highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (42) at the club.

His overall league performances in this campaign have earned Milinkovic-Savic a solid season rating of 7.27/10 from WhoScored, making him Lazio’s highest rated player.

This all highlights just how effective the player can be in the middle of the pitch with and without the ball in equal measure and why he’d be an impressive signing for the Toon.

Moving forward, if the Magpies aren’t looking a signing the midfielder this month, we feel they definitely should be in the summer once he enters the final year of his contract at Lazio as he’d massively strengthen Eddie Howe’s midfield.
