Newcastle United could make a transfer offer to sign Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Leandro Trossard this month.

The Tyneside club have been linked with a move for the Belgian in the past, mainly during the previous summer transfer window.

Since then, the 28-year-old has gone on to score seven goals and provide three assists in 16 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls.

With the January transfer window now open, some activity has been happening behind the scenes in regard to Trossard’s position at Brighton.

According to a recent report from 90min, the south coast club have triggered a 12-month extension on the winger’s contract, although his long-term future at the club remains in doubt.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The report also adds that Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth, who arrived at St. James’ Park from Brighton, is keen on reuniting with Trossard, while the Toon could make an offer for him this month if they feel he is attainable.

In addition to his goalscoring efforts for Brighton in the league this season, the winger, who has 101 club goals to his name throughout his career, has also had more shots at goal (38) and more shots on target (17) than any other player at the club.

His overall league performances this season have earned Trossard a season rating of 6.96/10 from WhoScored, making him the fourth-highest-rated player at Brighton. Meanwhile, he broke a record earlier this season for being the first player in Premier League history to score the first five goals under a new manager after Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment.

Having been praised for his “sensational” ability on the pitch by journalist Josh Bunting, it’s easy to see why Ashworth would want to reunite with the Brighton star at Newcastle, as he would almost certainly give Eddie Howe a capable extra attacking figure for his squad.

The fact that the Belgium international has shown how versatile he is in being able to play in a range of midfield and attacking positions this season also shows why he would be a useful signing for Howe and Newcastle.

Moving forward, we feel that Newcastle should definitely make an approach to Brighton this month to see if they would be willing to negotiate a deal.
