Manchester United have not been shy when it comes to spending significant amounts of money to bring new players to Old Trafford.
One player the club spent a fair bit of money on some years ago is Anthony Martial, who joined the Manchester club back in 2015 from AS Monaco in a deal worth a reported fee of £36m.
As Martial joined as a young French talent making a name for himself abroad, current United manager Erik ten Hag could have landed the next version of the 27-year-old by signing another French attacking talent that the club have been linked with this month in Marcus Thuram.
The 25-year-old joined his current club, Borussia Monchengladbach, during the 2019 summer transfer window and has since gone on to score 41 goals and deliver 26 assists in 121 appearances across all competitions.
This season has seen the French striker find the net 10 times and supply three assists in 17 Bundesliga appearances.
In addition to that, Thuram has racked up more shots at goal (58) and shots on target (31) than any other player in the division, highlighting his attacking prowess and the trouble he causes for opposition defenders and goalkeepers.
Would Marcus Thuram be a good signing for Man United?
Described as a “crazy” player but a “phenomenal” one by Denis Zakaria, the centre-forward has earned himself an overall performance rating of 7.32/10 from WhoScored, making him the eighth-highest-rated player in the German league.
As a French striker showing how much of a deadly attacking figure he is abroad, this showcases why he could have been seen as United’s next version of Martial, and it now may be a case of an opportunity missed – for now.
With the Monchengladbach star set to see his contract at the club expire in the summer, this should put him at the top of United’s transfer target list for the next transfer window, especially if they end up seeing Wout Weghorst leave the club at the end of the season when his loan deal at Old Trafford runs out.
