Liverpool have reportedly identified Teun Koopmeiners as a potential transfer target to help bolster their midfield this month.

After working his way through the youth ranks at AZ Alkmaar, the Dutchman joined Atalanta during the 2021 summer transfer window.

Since then, the midfielder has scored eight goals and delivered six assists in 59 appearances for the Italian club across all competitions.

Despite still having over two years left on his contract at his current club, the 24-year-old has caught the attention of Liverpool, who have already added a new Dutch player to their ranks this month in the shape of Cody Gakpo.

According to a recent report from Corriere Della Sera, Liverpool have their eyes on a potential January move for Koopmeiners to help strengthen their midfield.

How well do you know these Liverpool squad numbers? Starting off with an easy one: Mo Salah

Having started all but one of Atalanta’s 16 Serie A games this season, Koopmeiners has scored four goals and provided two assists for his side.

The midfielder has done so by playing in a variety of different positions across the middle of the park and even as a right-winger on one occasion.

This sort of versatility will surely make him a tempting prospect for Jurgen Klopp to have in his ranks given how has a significant number of players in his squad that can play in numerous positions.

Interestingly, Klopp wanted him to replace Georginio Wijnaldum back in 2021.

His overall league performances this season have earned the Netherlands international a solid rating of 7.05/10 from WhoScored, making him the third-highest rated player at Atalanta.

Hailed as a “beautiful” player by former youth coach Koen Stam, who also described the midfielder as a “leader” on the pitch,  Koopmeiners would reportedly cost the Merseyside club €40m (£35m) to sign this month.

Bearing in mind how Liverpool’s midfield has come under some scrutiny recently, with Jamie Carragher claiming that the club needs to bring some new players in for that area of the squad, securing a deal for the Atalanta figure could be a good first step for them.
