Liverpool were hit with a big blow when defender Virgil van Dijk was forced off the pitch against Brentford earlier this month with a hamstring injury.
It has since been revealed by Jurgen Klopp that the Dutchman will be out of action for a few weeks, which will be a blow for the Reds given how only Alisson and Mo Salah have played more minutes in the Premier League this season than him.
In terms of looking to the transfer market to bring in a potential replacement for Van Dijk or someone that could just strengthen Liverpool’s backline in general, one figure the Merseyside club have been linked with that could do the job is Milan Skriniar.
With the Reds already splashing the cash in recent weeks to land a transfer deal for Cody Gakpo, launching a move for the Inter Milan defender may have too much of a financial impact for FSG’s liking.
Taking that possibility into account, one way of funding a potential deal for Skriniar this month that Liverpool could consider is cashing in on Joe Gomez.
This season has seen the Englishman make 14 league appearances for Liverpool, starting nine of them.
Across those appearances, the defender has the joint-highest number of errors made (2) that have led to an opponent having a shot at Liverpool’s goal.
In addition to that, his performances have earned the 25-year-old, who is valued at £22 million (CIES), an overall season rating of 6.62/10 from WhoScored, leaving 11 other Liverpool players with higher ones.
Should Liverpool sign Skriniar this month?
In regards to Skriniar, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £92k-per-week at Inter and has been described as an “incredible” player by the club’s president Steven Zhang, he has eclipsed Gomez’s defensive efforts this season.
For example, the Slovakian has a higher average of tackles per game (1.6 vs 1.5) and interceptions per game (2.1 vs 2) than the Liverpool defender as well as having a higher passing success percentage than him (91.8% vs 84.9%).
Taking all of this into account, unless Klopp wouldn’t be willing to let Gomez leave this month, cashing in on someone to make a move for the Inter star could be something that FSG consider.
