Leeds United have made contact to sign Salernitana midfielder Lassana Coulibaly, according to reports.

The Whites remain in a relegation battle following their 2-1 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa last night, with the need for reinforcements clear should they want to avoid the drop at the end of the season.

The Mali international’s contract in the Serie A isn’t set to expire until 2026, but that hasn’t stopped the hierarchy from enquiring in the hope of bringing him to Elland Road.

According to Sportitalia (via Sport Witness), Leeds are battling it out with Nottingham Forest to land Coulibaly, with the two clubs both ‘in the race’ for his signature.

Victor Orta has already completed ‘timid surveys’ on the 26-year-old, but the Italian giants have ‘returned the interest to sender’, in other words rejecting the approach made.

Both top-flight clubs are reportedly facing an ‘uphill battle’ should they make a second attempt given Salernitana’s strong negotiating position.

TIF thoughts on Coulibaly to Leeds…

Coulibaly certainly won’t come cheap considering his contract situation, but looking at his statistics, Leeds should absolutely splash the cash should they want to fend off their fellow competitors to secure his services before the end of the window.

The Bamako native currently averages 3.1 tackles and 1.2 dribbles per league 90 minutes, highlighting the impact he can make at both ends of the pitch (WhoScored).

Coulibaly has been described as a midfield ‘destroyer’ by Steven Gerrard, and his presence in the centre would have a hugely positive influence on Jesse Marsch’s side in Yorkshire.
