Everton midfielder Amadou Onana was ‘at the heart of everything positive’ during the Premier League game vs Southampton this afternoon, according to journalist Joe Thomas.

The Toffees hosted the Saints at Goodison Park earlier today where Frank Lampard’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat following two second-half goals from James Ward-Prowse, with Onana finding the back of the net for the home team.

The Belgian netted the opening goal of the game on 39 minutes in what was his first in a Blues shirt, and the rest of his performance outside of his moment of glory didn’t go unnoticed on Merseyside.

Taking to Twitter, Thomas heaped praise on Onana for his hugely impressive display and claimed that the 21-year-old was the catalyst for the majority of Everton’s best spells. He wrote:

“Big chance – Demarai Gray lifts it over from a tight angle after being fed by Mykolenko. Onana started the move and is at the heart of everything positive Everton are doing so far.”

TIF thoughts on Onana…

Onana is only in his second season in the top-flight having put pen to paper last summer, but he’s taken to life at Everton like a duck to water, which was evident in his display today despite the negative result.

The Dakar native won all four of his aerial duels and had a 92% pass accuracy against Nathan Jones’ visitors, receiving an 8.1 match rating by SofaScore.

Onana is a hugely effective player for Lampard in the centre, and there’s no doubt that he will continue to have a significant impact on the team for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
