Aston Villa are in contact with ‘people close’ to Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Unai Emery has made his first official signing in charge at Villa Park, with full-back Alex Moreno arriving from Real Betis. The 29-year-old will provide competition at left-back and is also capable of playing further forward, with Emery ‘delighted’ over a deal.

NSWE promised the Villa boss a ‘huge’ 2023 budget, and links to Guendouzi have emerged in recent days, with reports suggesting Emery adores the French midfielder.

Talking to GiveMeSport, Romano shared what he knows about Villa and Guendouzi after the club sealed a move for Moreno. The transfer expert stated that Villa chiefs are ‘speaking to people close to’ Guendouzi, however, a bid is yet to be made.

“I think Aston Villa will be busy; they signed Alex Moreno, it’s done for €13 million.

“They are also speaking to people close to Matteo Guendouzi from Olympique Marseille, but Marseille are still waiting for Aston Villa to make an official bid.”

TIF thoughts on possible Guendouzi move…

Emery knows all about Guendouzi during their time at Arsenal, with the 23-year-old making more appearances under the Spaniard than any other manager during his career.

Therefore, a reunion could be a wise move, however, it may well need to be a club record transfer, with Ben Jacobs claiming that Marseille would want a fee in the region of €50m.

Hailed as a ‘great player’ by former Hertha Berlin sporting director Arne Friedrich, you’d expect that Guendouzi, who can play in a variety of midfield roles, still has room for improvement before reaching his prime, so a big-money move could be worth it, providing Emery remains at the club for the foreseeable future.
