Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing a transfer move for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

After making 91 appearances for his previous club Schalke, during which he scored five goals and delivered seven assists, the midfielder joined Juventus on an initial loan deal back in September 2020 before joining on a permanent basis the following summer.

Now with 92 appearances under his belt for the Serie A side across all competitions, the 24-year-old has found the net 13 times and supplied four assists.

Having faced off against some of England’s best players during the recent World Cup in Qatar, the United States international could be on his way to the Premier League in the coming weeks.

According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Villa have identified McKennie as a potential transfer target for the current January window.

The journalist also added that McKennie would be interested in joining Unai Emery’s side and that Juventus could sell the midfielder this month if they receive a suitable offer.

Do you remember where Aston Villa made their signings from? Take our quiz to find out! First up, who did Frederic Guilbert turn out for immediately before moving to Villa Park?

Despite previously being hailed as a “monster” by journalist Wes Rucker and having a reported price tag of €30m (£26m), the midfielder has not shown why he would be a worthy signing for Villa in his latest campaign with Juventus.

Indeed, 16 players at the Italian club have a higher passing accuracy than McKennie (81.1%), who also has one of the lowest percentages for aerial duels won (31.6%) at the club.

His overall performances in Serie A this term have earned the American a rather underwhelming season rating of 6.63/10 from WhoScored, making him one of the lowest-rated players at the Old Lady that have started more than one league game.

Taking all of this into account, we feel that Villa should definitely reconsider their apparent interest in McKennie before making a move to potentially sign him.

If Emery is keen on adding a new midfielder to his squad before the end of the month, he should perhaps look at other potential options ahead of the Juventus figure given how unconvincing he has been this season.
