Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox was blown away by the debut performance of West Bromwich Albion youngster Jovan Malcolm.

The 20-year-old came on in the 61st minute and bagged a header in injury time to make it 4-0 to the Baggies against Chesterfield in their FA Cup replay.

Malcolm excelled with West Brom’s Under-18s side where he netted 20 goals in 37 appearances, while he has also played for the Under-21s, scoring six times in 25 games.

Last season, the prospect had a loan spell with Accrington Stanley, playing 13 times in total, failing to register a goal in League One did scoring once in the EFL Trophy.

Speaking on the Express & Star’s YouTube channel after WBA’s victory, Cox raved over the youngster’s performance and expressed his delight as the Baggies academy starlet capped it off with a superb goal.

He stated: “I think the academy is probably the story of the night. It was great to see Jovan Malcolm coming on, his senior debut coming from the bench and scoring a cracking header.

“Towering header, wasn’t it? Great to see to make it 4-0.”

TIF Thoughts on Cox’s comments…

We believe that Malcolm certainly made an impact with his substitute cameo against National League opposition and will give manager Carlos Corberan something to think about going forward.

Malcolm may not be ready to break his way into the West Brom squad on a regular basis, as Daryl Dike, Kenneth Zohore and Karlan Grant are all battling it out in that position at present, so Corberan should perhaps look to give Malcolm another opportunity out on loan in the near future.

Bristol City will be the Baggies’ opponents in the fourth round of the FA Cup at the end of the month, so Malcolm may yet get another senior appearance to his name after his impactful cameo in the previous round.
