Newcastle United will try and bring in Marcus Thuram in the January transfer window as his contract enters its final months.

This is according to transfer guru Graeme Bailey, who has been speaking on the Loaded Mag YouTube channel ahead of the upcoming winter market.

Eddie Howe’s men will enter the New Year in unchartered waters as they currently sit in third spot of the Premier League table with a seven-point gap to the league leaders.

Which of these United States stars has been linked with the Toon recently?

The 25-year-old’s current deal at Borussia Monchengladbach is set to expire at the end of the season and it’s reported the Bundesliga outfit will look to cash in on the forward.

With a spot in the Champions League a real possibility for the Toon, Bailey believes the French forward is a player Dan Ashworth will look to bring in over the next month:

“There’s a firm interest there,” Bailey said.

“He’s a good age. I think 25 now, isn’t it? He fits perfectly into what Eddie Howe wants to do and at £10m he’s just too good not to go for. I think they will try and get that done in January but it’s gonna be very hard. There’s a lot of clubs in for him.”

TIF Thoughts on Bailey’s comments…

This does feel like a deal which could make a lot of sense for the Toon this Jauary given there is also the belief that there will not be a huge sum of money to be spent next month.

Would Thuram be an upgrade on ASM?

Yes

Yes

No

No

So in potentially signing Thuram, the Magpies would be getting a French international who has shone in the Bundesliga for a cut price given his current contract situation.

The 25-year-old, who has been described as ‘crazy’, has made an electric start to Gladbach’s 2022/23 campaign where he has scored 10 goals and provided three assists in just 15 league appearances (via Transfermarkt).

And we think with Allan Saint-Maximin failing to provide consistent goals and assists under Howe, a player like Thuram could be an instant upgrade on Tyneside and would not break the bank in what may be a strict January window.
