Barry Ferguson has claimed that Rangers have made a mistake in allowing Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to run into the final year of their contracts.

Both Kent and Morelos see their deals expire at the end of the season with no new contract in sight for either player.

This leaves the Gers and Michael Beale with a huge headache as they face the prospect of losing both stars for nothing in the summer.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show podcast, former Rangers midfielder Ferguson reacted to Beale’s claims that key Rangers stars were seeing their transfer value drop amid expiring contract situations.

He said: “He mentioned one or two players’ transfer value went down quite a bit, but again, that’s with letting them, for me, go onto the final year of their contract. I think that’s a mistake, no doubt in my mind about that. So listen, time will tell.”

TIF Thoughts on Ferguson’s comments…

As the Scotsman said, it looks to be a massive mistake from the Gers not to have acted sooner. with both aces ranked as the club’s highest-valued players (as per Transfermarkt), leaving the club set to miss out on huge fees that would significantly improve their squad.

Despite both players’ drop-offs in form this season, with them managing just four goals between them across 45 outings, we feel their futures are key to Rangers whether they remain in Glasgow or not.

Although it is a potentially damaging situation as far as the quality of the squad is concerned if the two stalwarts were to leave for free, it’s also a disappointing situation for the fans, with both players woven into the fabric of the club and synonymous with their rise back to the top of Scottish football.

Both played key roles in the club’s first title win since their return to the top flight, with Morelos topping Rangers’ scoring charts in four of the last five seasons, while Kent is closing in on 200 club appearances.
