Pundit Tam McManus has stated to PLZ Soccer that Rangers boss Michael Beale should look to sell Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos should they not want to sign new contracts.
Both Kent and Morelos’ contracts at Ibrox run out at the end of the season.
Former manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst had stated in the summer that talks with the duo were headed in the right direction, though both players are still set to depart Glasgow in the summer as it stands.
And McManus believes that the priority should be to speak to the likes of Kent and Morelos to see if they can agree new deals.
He said: “I think that his first conversations when he goes in will be to sit them two down, get them in his office and look them in the eye and say, ‘do you want to be here long-term?’
“And if the answer’s yes, I think he’ll try and thrash out a new contract out for them. I think he’ll try and push the boat out to keep them. If the answer’s no, I think he’ll try and get it done as soon as possible.
“I think they’ll try and get as much money for them, but he’s got to ask that question. He’s got to look them in the eye and say, ‘do you want to be here, do you want to be part of Rangers?’ And if the is the answer is positive, then I think he’ll keep playing them and try and get [them] a new contract.
“But if not, then I think he’s got to get them out, because that uncertainty’s not good for the squad.
“I think he’s got to get that sorted out immediately, that’s got be his priority.”
TIF Thoughts on McManus’ comments…
We believe that the duo could be very important players going forward for Beale and Rangers, as they’ve proven in the past what they can do.
Kent has seven goal contributions from 13 appearances this season, while last term, he picked up 13 goal contributions across the 2021/22 campaign. If anyone can conjure up some creativity in this Rangers side, it’s Kent.
As for Morelos, he’s got three goals this season, so there’s room for improvement. Having said that, the Colombian was able to find the net 11 times last year, so there’s definitely plenty of goals in him.
It all comes down to whether they want to stay at the club. If they don’t, that will still be beneficial to Rangers, as the club can sell the duo in January – though time is running out to get decent fees for them.
Beale may have been brought in to oversee a new era at Rangers. So the club clearly trust him to introduce a new crop of players and signings should the likes of Kent and Morelos want to leave come the summer.
