Presenter Hamish Carton has stated that raved about Celtic’s new signing, Alistair Johnston on the ’67 Hail Hall’ YouTube channel

The signing was announced a couple of days ago by the club on their website. Manager Ange Postecoglou, stated he is someone who can, ‘add to the club’.

The 24-year-old has was recently at the World Cup with Canada. He played in all three of their group matches against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco. He averaged just under two tackles per game and achieved and 82% pass accuracy across the tournament, per Sofascore. However, Canada lost every game and finished bottom of Group F.

Here’s what Carton had to say on Johnston (4:31), “I’m pretty happy with this from my limited and look at him during the World Cup, mainly consigned to the second match against Croatia when we kinda had a feeling at that stage was going to sign, had a real good look at him in that game.

“And I don’t think it was his best game but he still looked pretty decent. I think he’s got a bit of everything. Real good passer loves a kind of diagonal switch. Seems to be really adept to doing that. Strong runner decent pace, I would say and strong defensively and loves a tackle.

“So I think he’s got a bit of everything. And I think more than anything, that personality suggests that he’s someone who’s keen to progress his own career and is very, very keen to play for Celtic.”

TIF’s view on Carton’s comments…

Johnston could be the player that Celtic will hope to have for years to come, at 24-years-old, he’s certainly got a lot of time on his side.

In 2022, Johnston picked up eight goal contributions in the MLS with CF Montreal. With that output from a full-back, Hoops boss, Postecoglou could look to turn him into even more of an attacking threat.

He’s also solid at the back, in the MLS this season, the right-back has helped to keep seven clean sheets for the Canadian outfit.

Johnston has only played his football at club level in America and Canada. So, it’ll be a change of environment for him, but he seems up to the challenge according to the manager.

Postecoglou said ‘He’s really keen to come across and take the next step in his career.’

The World Cup will have been great experience for Johnston, who will hope he can hit the ground running for Celtic when he makes his debut.
