Medical expert Ben Dinnery has reported that West Ham United defender Aaron Cresswell has a ‘little bit of a hamstring issue’ after picking up an injury in a recent friendly.

During the week, the Hammers took on Cambridge United as they look to build up match fitness with the Premier League set to return at the end of the month. Strikes from Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma and Pierre Ekwah scoring, as well as an own goal, were enough to see David Moyes’ men pick up a 4-2 win on the day.

However, it wasn’t an ideal outing for all of his players. Indeed, Cresswell had to leave the pitch after just 15 minutes with assistant coach Mark Warburton later stating that it was done as a ‘precaution’.

However, in a new interview with Football Insider, injury expert Dinnery has now provided more information on the player’s fitness status explaining that was a hamstring issue.

He said: “There’s no need to take any risk in non-competitive games. It was a little bit of a hamstring issue, I understand, and he’s no stranger to the odd muscle or soft tissue injury.

“Of course, when a player complains or suggests that he’s felt something, the best decision to take is to just take him straight off, especially when you’ve got Emerson to come on in his place.

“The conditions themselves didn’t exactly help it. If your mobility is affected and you’re not fully warmed up and ready to stretch those legs, then the potential implications are something more sinister or long-term.

“Hopefully that decision was taken with one eye on it being a meaningless game, a training ground run out to build a little bit of fitness.

“What you don’t want is a player potentially suffering a serious injury which could rule him out for the remainder of the year.”

TIF thoughts on Aaron Cresswell and West Ham United…

Cresswell has started all but one game for West Ham in the league up to this point in the season and so Moyes certainly won’t want to see his key defender pick up a long-term injury shortly before domestic football returns.

What’s more, the left-back has suffered from a number of different fitness issues – including hamstring problems – over the course of his career and so he must be treated with more caution than most.

And so, it certainly makes a lot of sense for Moyes to have taken him off so early in that recent friendly against Cambridge. Hopefully, Cresswell will recover from this minor setback just fine and will be fit to start when the Premier League starts again.

Do you think Aaron Cresswell should still be West Ham's starting left-back?
