Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, but journalist Ed Aarons has given insight into why Spurs may not choose to sign him.

The Morocco international has been in fine form at the 2022 World Cup, helping his side top a group containing Belgium and Croatia, and the 26-year-old was previously linked with a move to North London.

The defensive midfielder has picked up nine yellow cards in 20 appearances this season, highlighting how he may have the aggression required to play for Antonio Conte, but given the midfield options they already have, Aarons suggests it may not be a necessary deal at this moment in time.

“I think, potentially, he’s a little bit what they’ve already got in a way,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

“I think a lot of Tottenham fans want them to try and get a more creative midfielder, but in that system, it’s hard to have someone like that, you need kind of two pivots.

“But he’s really good at that, he’s got loads of experience as well. I think I remember seeing him much earlier in his career at a youth tournament, and it seems like he’s been around for ages.

“Obviously, his older brother Nordin Amrabat was at Watford for a bit as well, but he’s very important for Morocco with the tempo that they try to play under the new manager.”

TIF Thoughts on Amrabat…

Whilst the Fiorentina star is a talented player, Spurs have other priorities that need addressing before signing a player similar to their current midfield roster.

Pierre-Emile Hojberg and Rodrigo Bentancur have been impressive this season, with Yves Bissouma also arriving in the summer, and all three are tough-tackling central midfielders.

We feel defenders, particularly a centre-back are more urgently needed, and if Spurs do sign another midfielder, they need someone with more creativity given the recent issues Spurs have had in the Premier League.

Amrabat ranks in the bottom 31% of European midfielders for shot-creating actions, and the bottom 1% for touches in the attacking penalty area as per FBref. His qualities lie mainly as a defensive midfielder, and it is certainly a deal which we do not think should not be prioritised over other positions.
