Tottenham Hotspur are waiting to find out Stefan De Vrij’s availability before making a January move, claims Dean Jones.

Spurs will be forced to wait to find out De Vrij’s future with Inter Milan first seeking a replacement for the centre-back.

The 30-year-old has been a stalwart in Serie A for both Lazio and Inter but with his contract expiring in the summer, his stay in Italy could be set to finish in January or on a free transfer if his contract runs down in the summer.

De Vrij is still a key part of Inter’s side with him featuring 16 times this season in the league and Champions League meaning the Nerazzurri will be reluctant to let him leave without an alternative lined up.

Something that Jones told This Is Futbol could be in the offing and a positive step for Spurs’ chase.

“Chris Smalling is one that has been put to them and they’re mulling over.

“So Spurs need to wait on details like this before they fully understand de Vrij’s availability, but he’s certainly a player of interest,” Jones said.

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

If Inter can nail Smalling or a replacement then de Vrij would be a fantastic cut-price option to go for in January.

The Dutchman, who has been hailed as a ‘world-beater’, would be a significant upgrade on Eric Dier and Clement Lenglet in North London with his 2.16 interceptions dwarfing the Spurs pair’s 1.40 and 0.63 respectively, as well as having the least amount of controlling errors, proving he’s also a more reliable player on the ball.

Antonio Conte will be desperate for a centre-back and there would be none better than the man who played 32 Serie A games under him during Inter’s Scudetto winning season of 2020/21, Conte needs a defender he can trust and the 30-year-old is certainly that.
