Lionel Messi believes Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero should’ve been named Player of the Match in Argentina’s World Cup win against Australia.
Messi was once again the man of the moment as his majestic opening goal set Argentina on their way to a 2-1 win over Australia in the World Cup last 16.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was at his stellar best as he continuously drove forward the Albiceleste’s attacks and should’ve been rewarded with a couple of assists on the night.
After receiving the Player of the Match award, he was asked who he would’ve given the award to other than himself, to which he singled out Romero.
“Who I would give the MOTM other than me? It is difficult to mention a specific player, but if I have to mention a player, it is Cuti Romero. He is a prominent and experienced on the field,” Messi said.
TIF Thoughts on Messi’s comments…
Romero has been sensational at Spurs since he arrived and has made himself a household name in the Premier League and the spearhead of the Lilywhites’ defence.
Winner of the best defender in Serie A award for the 2020/21 season whilst at Atalanta, the 24-year-old completed only his second 90-minute performance since October as he begins to hit top gear at the business end of the World Cup.
He will likely play a crucial part if Argentina and Messi are to finally get their hands on the trophy with his one tackle, interception and five duels won decisive to Argentina surviving a late scare from the Aussie’s onslaught.
