Tottenham Hotspur have set finishing in the top four as the absolute minimum if they hope to catch up with the likes of Manchester City in the long run.

This is according to Ben Jacobs who has been discussing the latest transfer and contract news from N17 with Chris Cowlin on his YouTube channel.

Spurs have made improvements under Antonio Conte with the Lilywhites making their return to the Champions League this season after two campaigns outside of the elite European tournament.

Starting with the club's £60m summer signing, which of these players could Richarlison be facing?

However, they are already sitting eight points behind the league leaders and are just keeping ahold of their spot inside the Premier League’s top four.

And with the January transfer window on the horizon, Jacobs has said those within Spurs have claimed from a financial point of view, finishing in the top four has to be the least Spurs achieve:

“Is there any comfort in finishing second or third or qualifying for Champions League with time to spare? There is if you do it season on season, on season, because you start showing that stability.

“But I think at the moment, it’s really just from what I understand anyway, talking to those close to the management team, it’s just about making sure that they’re no worse than fourth because that’s the foundation both financially and strategically on what they’re building from.”

TIF Thoughts on Jacobs’ comments…

We have to agree that a spot in the Champions League should be the minimum that Spurs are targetting going into a season especially when they have a manager like Conte at the helm.

Do you expect more than top four at Spurs?

No

Conte’s future is up in the air at the moment and given his history of not staying around clubs for too long, we do think finishing outside of the top four could be detrimental to Conte’s future in N17.

Obviously, qualifying for the Champions League provides the club with greater financial spending power, but if Spurs can return to becoming a regular Champions League side it will surely help them persuade bigger targets to make the move.

When competing against the likes of Manchester City in the Premier League, it is things like consistent Champions League football which could potentially help Spurs secure players such as Alessandro Bastoni.
