Journalist Will Freeman has tipped Tottenham Hotspur to make a move for Memphis Depay this winter as he would be a ‘perfect’ fit for manager Antonio Conte.
With the January transfer set to open in less than a week’s time, Premier League clubs will be eyeing up possible new signings to help improve them in the second half of the season.
In an article for football.london, Freeman has now claimed that the forward is ‘one of the most talented forwards in Europe’ and will suit Conte’s 3-4-3 system due to his ability to play in any of the three attacking roles.
“The Barcelona forward was linked with Spurs earlier this year and will become a free agent in the summer as it appears he is not favoured by Xavi in Catalonia.
“The Dutch star remains one of the most talented forwards in Europe and would fit well into any of the three roles at the head of Conte’s 3-4-3 system.
“His versatility is akin to that of Richarlison, and following injuries throughout the Spurs forward line earlier in the season, it could be a perfect signing for Conte.”
TIF Thoughts on Memphis Depay and Spurs…
However, the Dutchman has impressed elsewhere and recently reminded fans of his quality by scoring at the World Cup. What’s more, he has spent time in his career playing on either flank and down the middle – operating as an advanced striker or in a deeper role. So he could indeed come in and fit into Conte’s setup nicely with such versatility.
It’s never easy to sign players in the winter market, and seeing as Depay struggled last time he played for an English club, this would be a risk. However, if he can be picked up on the cheap to add some depth to the Spurs squad, this could be a decent bit of business.
