Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris pulled off an incredible save to deny Piotr Zielinski in the first half to keep Poland at bay during France’s World Cup last 16 clash with Poland.
In the 37th minute, Lloris stood strong to beat away Zielinski’s stinging strike from inside the box to deny the 28-year-old his second goal at this year’s World Cup.
The Spurs shot-stopper was forced into action just minutes after his poor clearance allowed the Polish attack to press and win a throw high up, Poland’s left-back Bartosz Bereszynski beat Jules Kounde in the subsequent move before pulling back to the Napoli man.
BBC co-commentator Dion Dublin applauded the reaction from France’s number one, saying (37:20):
“You know what, it’s an amazing save! Lloris just stood firm, and big, and strong, he made sure that ball wasn’t going past him.”
TIF Thoughts on Dublin’s comments…
It was a massive stop in every sense of the word from the France captain who came up trumps to deny his side falling behind in a tough-fought first-half battle against underdogs Poland.
Lloris had even been slammed earlier in the game for some sloppy play which saw him drop the ball after he rose to claim a cross which was floated in.
Former footballer, Tom Williams tweeted: “Already 2 big mistakes in this game Always got a blunder in him.”
However, he certainly redeemed himself on the day which marked his 142nd appearance for his country – equalling the record-holder Lilian Thuram.
