Injury expert Ben Dinnery has given his verdict on the injury status of Tottenham Hotspur star Rodrigo Bentancur.

Speaking on the FPL Injuries YouTube channel, Dinnery said that Bentancur ‘may be in with a shout’ of playing in the new year if he responds well to his ‘activity-based protocols’.

Antonio Conte has issued his verdict on the player, stating that with the Uruguayan suspended for their trip to Brentford on Boxing Day, he should be ‘good’ for the clash against Aston Villa on 1st January.

Bentancur was substituted in the 34th minute against Ghana after suffering an injury. Despite their 2-0 win at the World Cup, Uruguay were eliminated from the group stage.

Dinnery stated: “Bentacur picked up an adductor problem playing for Uruguay in the World Cup. Initial timeline on that was around about three weeks.

“That gives his involvement over Christmas a 50/50 shout. If all goes really, really well and he responds and he comes through those activity-based protocols without any kind of problems, then he may be in with a shout at playing for Tottenham over this period. If not, we’re looking at early 2023.”

TIF Thoughts on Dinnery’s comments…

Considering that Bentancur is coming back from injury, Spurs won’t want to rush him back and risk another injury being picked up that rules him out for even longer.

The Uruguayan has been one of Tottenham’s most important players this season. He has a Sofascore rating of 7.27 based on his performances in the Premier League, with only Harry Kane having a higher score among the Spurs squad.

Bentancur is also one of the top passers across Europe in the past year. When compared to other midfielders from Europe’s top competitions, the 25-year-old is in the top 16% for pass completion and assists (FBref).

So ahead of Spurs’ clash with Villa on New Year’s Day, we think fans will be delighted to see him back. With Tottenham looking to keep their position in the top four, they’ll be hoping one of their top performers will be back soon without any further issues.
