Journalist Dean Jones believes that Tottenham Hotspur would be laying out a huge marker to their rivals if they were able to bring Josko Gvardiol to the club.

According to Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport, Tottenham are among a long list of European heavyweights interested in signing the promising centre-half.

The report suggests that Spurs are set to rival Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Juventus for the 20-year-old, who RB Leipzig value at close to £69m.

Another source has claimed that compatriot Ivan Perisic has been trying to encourage Gvardiol to turn down all other approaches in favour of a move to the Lilywhites.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has now said that it would be a major coup if the north London club managed to win the race, and believes the club’s sporting director Fabio Paratici would come in for plenty of praise.

He said: “If Paratici could convince Gvardiol to join Spurs ahead of Chelsea, then he deserves, at the very least, a pat on the back.

“It would be a serious statement signing from Tottenham if they could get that one over the line.”

The Croatian colossus, who is valued at £102 million (CIES Football Observatory), has certainly caught the eye out in Qatar during his nation’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals.

He has played every minute of his country’s campaign and has come in for a glowing endorsement from Rio Ferdinand.

While on punditry for the BBC, the Manchester United legend said: “He’s been my favourite defender at the tournament to watch so far.

“He has great presence, he’s happy for the battle, physical and has a wand of a left foot and he has pace as well.

“All those attributes are what you need as a modern-day defender.”

Labelled an ‘extraordinary talent’ by former Bayern Munich striker and current national assistant coach Ivica Olic, Gvardiol could well be the ideal candidate for Antonio Conte to strengthen the left-hand side of his back three, but it will be interesting to see if Paratici is able to fend off other suitors.
