Journalist Ben Jacobs has insisted that Newcastle United could sign Marcus Thuram next month amid Allan Saint-Maximin’s latest comments on the France international.

It has recently been reported that Newcastle are amongst the frontrunners to land Thuram in January amid his contractual situation, which could see them land him for a cut-price fee in order for Borussia Monchengladbach to receive some sort of transfer sum.

The winger would seemingly be able to settle in on Tyneside quite easily given he appears to have a close relationship with Newcastle ace Saint-Maximin, who’s spoken about how he hopes the club can bring his compatriot to St James’ Park.

Jacobs was speaking on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel and claimed that the Magpies have a chance to sign Thuram, although a transfer is by no means guaranteed.

He said: “He’s at a good age, and I also think within the market, anyway, a pretty decent price as well.

“I saw the comments by ASM and they were cheeky, obviously. I do think there’s an opportunity because Borussia Monchengladbach want to sell, but I’m not aware at this point that Newcastle have actually made an enquiry or started anything.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s interest in Thuram…

Reports from Germany have recently suggested that the Magpies are now leading the race for Thuram, which will please Saint-Maximin to have a fellow countryman at the club – but it could be huge for Eddie Howe also.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

This is because since returning from injury, Saint-Maixmin has failed to hit the same heights, with zero goals in his four appearances, so signing some of Thuram’s ability could perhaps push the maverick winger to up his performances before he falls down the pecking order.

Thuram has been in red-hot form this season in the German Bundesliga with the striker managing to register 13 goal involvements, although last campaign he got just three, so the Magpies will have to be wary that this isn’t just a purple patch and avoid handing him a lucrative deal before getting burned further down the line.
