Journalist Ross Gregory has claimed that Newcastle United target Angelo Gabriel could now move given he’s just turned 18.

It has been reported that Newcastle won’t be looking to go big in January and may well look to build for the future, which has been the case with the signing of Garang Kuol.

The Australia international may not be the only young talent arriving in 2023, though, with links to Gabriel reusing to go away – and Gregory has revealed the talented player is a viable option for the Magpies to recruit now he has turned 18.

Gregory spoke about Newcastle’s interest in the Santos youngster on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel.

He said: “[On] the 21st of December, it is the 18th birthday of Angelo Gabriel, who is the young Brazilian lad at Santos who Newcastle have been watching, who they’ve been linked with.

Will Newcastle finish in the top seven?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“Why is that significant? Well, it’s significant because players can’t move before their 18th birthday. So even if the club wanted to sign Angelo, he wouldn’t have been able to move until his 18th birthday.

“So, is that something that’s likely to happen? He’s a player Newcastle have certainly watched and are certainly interested in. Once he turns 18, he’s then able to move clubs, so it might be one of those [to] watch this space.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Gabriel…

The fact that Newcastle are now actively looking to sign some of the best talents from all over the world is a testament to the drastic changes Dan Ashworth has brought about on Tyneside since arriving.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

It shows that PIF do not just want to build a first-team squad to win now, they want to build solid foundations for many years to come, and signing someone such as Gabriel would certainly do that.

However, signing the record-breaking wonderkid won’t be very easy for Newcastle as it’s been reported that Chelsea – who boast a strong academy – are looking to land the youngster ahead of the Magpies, so Ashworth will have to act quickly if he wishes to land the star talent.
