Newcastle United: Referee may have made mistake in ruling out Callum Wilson goal

Officials may have made a big mistake by ruling out Callum Wilson’s goal for Newcastle United in their most recent game. 

The Magpies finally returned to domestic action this week as they hosted Premier League rivals Bournemouth in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

In the end, a tight affair was decided by an Adam Smith own goal scored in the 67th minute. However, Eddie Howe’s men could have found things a lot easier had they not had a goal ruled out in the first half.

Indeed, Newcastle looked to have taken the lead through Wilson, but referee John Brooks later ruled the effort out after Joe Willock was flagged for being offside.

Upon watching replays of the event – shared on YouTube (2:40) – it looks as though the midfielder is onside initially and then doesn’t touch the ball once he is in an offside position.

TIF Thoughts on Callum Wilson and Newcastle…

It’s easy to see why there might have been confusion over the incident as the call was very tight. Not only did the officials have to decide if Willock was onside or not, they also had to work out if he touched the ball.

Without VAR to help them out, the decision was made to rule out the goal, but replays of the incident suggest that this could have been a mistake. Some journalists certainly seemed to think so.

Indeed, journalist Chris Waugh called it ‘controversial’ and insisted that Willock ‘didn’t play the ball’. In the end, though, it didn’t prevent Howe and co from picking up the win to progress into the next round of the competition, but the boot could easily have been on the other foot on a night like this.
